Named by the Guinness Book of World Records as one of the world's most expensive items ever, an original Warhol portrait sold for $88.7 million at a Sotheby's auction on November 14, 2004. However, on October 31, 2014, Christie's London sold "four beautiful drawings by Salvador Dali" for over £52 million ($79.3 million), making them the most expensive pieces of art ever auctioned off at once. But what makes these four surrealist sketches so special? First of all…"At age fifty-one Dali started drawing with particular intensity. He was able to produce masterpieces, sometimes in the form of large-scale drawings, which already contained all the elements of his mature work. These drawings were the best documented period of Dali's life, especially in terms of technical analysis." His obsession with detail can be seen throughout his works; right down to the complex perspectives and geometrical structures that take shape through his use of line. Secondly "These four works are among the most impressive examples of Dali's drawing at this period." Bringing out familiar themes, such as "The Great Masturbator", for instance, Dali has captured an intense relationship between himself and objects surrounding him. Taking this into account, these sketches are the most substantial pieces of art Dali created during his lifetime, so is it any surprise they have sold for over £52 million? Lastly, Dali's association with Surrealism; "Dali was at the forefront of the Surrealist movement." As such, he was influenced by medical imagery and his fascination with sickness led to many of his most famous paintings. "As a consequence of this interest in medicine and illness, he produced some of his most interesting drawings which are disturbing precisely because they resemble medical photographs."
